Regime Behavior in the Upper Stratosphere as a Precursor of Stratosphere-Troposphere Coupling in the Northern Winter

چکیده

Abstract A new regime index is constructed to capture the seasonal development of stratospheric polar vortex in northern winter, based on standard deviation Ertel’s potential vorticity upper stratosphere November-December. The narrow-jet flow characterized by a that more confined high latitudes early winter stratosphere. This upper-level configuration susceptible disturbances upward propagating planetary-scale Rossby waves; thus weakens earlier and vertically shallower. wide-jet broader-than-average extends further into subtropics early-winter night jet then gradually strengthens, moves poleward penetrates deep lowermost stratosphere, with sharply-defined edge accompanied due frequent wave breaking. Composite differences analyses show wide narrow regimes, defined uppermost November-December, lead different circulation anomalies lower-stratosphere troposphere January-February, offering for improved predictability sub-seasonal forecasts up two months ahead. lower tropospheric responses January-February are zonally asymmetric. projects most strongly over North Atlantic, an equatorward-shifted, and/or broader mid-latitude westerly jet. wide-jet-regime response weakened Pacific. regimes also differ their impacts storm track Western Europe east coast America, which may have implications extreme weather events those regions.

Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling in the Southern Hemisphere

This study examines the temporal evolution of the tropospheric circulation following large-amplitude variations in the strength of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) stratospheric polar vortex in data from 1979 to 2001 and following the SH sudden stratospheric warming of 2002. In both cases, anomalies in the strength of the SH stratospheric polar vortex precede similarly signed anomalies in the tropo...

CO2 in the upper troposphere: Influence of stratosphere-troposphere exchange

[1] A two-dimensional transport model constrained to measured surface CO2 concentrations was used to simulate the spatial and temporal variation of CO2 in the atmosphere for the period from 1975 to 2004. We find that the amplitude, phase and shape of the CO2 seasonal cycle vary as a function of both altitude and latitude. Cross tropopause exchanges, especially the downward branch of the Brewer-...

The Extratropical Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere

[1] The extratropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (Ex‐UTLS) is a transition region between the stratosphere and the troposphere. The Ex‐UTLS includes the tropopause, a strong static stability gradient and dynamic barrier to transport. The barrier is reflected in tracer profiles. This region exhibits complex dynamical, radiative, and chemical characteristics that place stringent spa...

On the Role of Radiative Processes in Stratosphere–Troposphere Coupling

Climate change in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) polar stratosphere is associated with substantial changes in the atmospheric circulation that extend to the earth’s surface. The mechanisms that drive the changes in the SH troposphere are not fully understood, but most previous hypotheses have focused on the role of atmospheric dynamics rather than that of radiation. This study quantifies the radi...
